Putnam City West swept Putnam City North 3-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 29, staying perfect through the Putnam City volleyball series.
The Patriots won by set scores of 25-9, 25-13 and 25-17, according to West Metro Sports. The victory gave West a 3-0 record against sister schools Putnam City and Putnam City North this season.
Sophomore libero Mia Lino set the tone early. With the first set tied 6-6, Lino rattled off 16 consecutive serves, pushing the Patriots to a 22-7 lead before North won a side-out. More than half of those serves were aces.
"Our kids came in feeling like we are the better team and wanted to play with that confidence," coach Tyler Thompson said. He noted that North has historically dominated the district rivalry and that his players can sometimes feel intimidated by the name on the jersey.
Serving has been West's identity all season. After a five-set win over Putnam City on Sept. 22, Thompson told West Metro Sports, "I know I sound like a broken record on the serves but it is what makes us go."
Against North, the Patriots backed that up at the net, too. Sophomore Caitlyn Alexander and junior Kami Liles combined for several blocks that Thompson said frustrated North's tall front line. Senior Zoe Salas closed out the third set with a dump shot to seal the match.
The game doubled as a "Pink Out" night, with multiple middle schools in the building to watch.
