An 11-year-old Millwood Public Schools student died Sept. 10 after collapsing during football practice in northeast Oklahoma City.

Jaheir Booker, a fifth grader, collapsed during what Superintendent Cecilia Robinson-Woods described as a middle school football practice session, KOCO reported. Coaches performed CPR and called emergency medical personnel. Booker was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The collapse happened around 4:30 p.m., according to OKC Fox.

Robinson-Woods said Sept. 11 that coaches initially treated the collapse as heat-related because it occurred during football practice. She noted, however, that Sept. 10 had been "a pretty cool day."

"They're living with having to go through that, thinking, 'You should've done more,' but not knowing what more you could do," Robinson-Woods said of the coaching staff.

She praised the coaches' emergency response but said the harder part is what follows. The aftermath weighs on coaches, staff, students and Booker's family, she said.

"We do a great job of planning how to handle an emergency, but we know what really gets us is the next steps afterward," Robinson-Woods said, adding that the district is reaching out to support Booker's family.

Booker had attended Millwood schools since he was four years old. Robinson-Woods described him as an outgoing, thoughtful child who was loved across the district.

Millwood Public Schools is a PK-12 district on North Martin Luther King Avenue that enrolled about 1,100 students across three campuses in the 2023-24 school year, according to federal data. The district serves elementary, middle and high school students.

Grief counselors were on-site Friday to support students and staff, the district said. No cause of death has been publicly reported, and the district has not announced whether a formal review of the incident is planned.
