Putnam City West scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to stun Lawton Eisenhower 16-15 on Friday, Sept. 25, in the 6A-II-1 district opener.

The Patriots trailed 15-3 entering the final period. They had lost starting quarterback KJ Cowell to a leg injury and senior running back Kendyll Weaver to a separate injury. Senior receiver Aizjon Robinson, listed at 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds, took over at quarterback.

Robinson scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 6-yard run with 3:51 left.

"It was just a knock down, drag out fight. It's the grittiest of grittiest wins," coach Rickey Lewis told West Metro Sports.

Lawton Eisenhower controlled the first three quarters. Junior Chadwick Anderson scored on an 11-yard run from the Wildcat formation on the game's opening drive. After Anderson left with an injury, sophomore Rico Watkins added an 11-yard touchdown run with 3:38 left in the third quarter to push the lead to 15-3.

West's lone first-half score came on a 32-yard field goal by senior Brandon Chaj. Senior Ishmeal Fields had caught a short pass from Cowell and turned it into a 40-yard gain to set up the kick.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Patriots' defense. Eisenhower quarterback Amir Jiles threw three interceptions, two of them by Fields. The senior cornerback picked off an overthrown ball early in the quarter, then intercepted another pass near his own goal line and returned it to midfield with 7:06 remaining.

Between those turnovers, senior Anthony Dupree, who replaced the injured Weaver, punched in a 1-yard touchdown run with 10:09 left. Chaj's extra point cut the deficit to 15-10.

After Fields' second interception, Robinson took over. He ripped off a 19-yard run to move the Patriots into scoring range, then finished the drive with his 6-yard score. A two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving West up 16-15.

A third interception sealed it. The Patriots ran out the clock.

The win moved Putnam City West to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in district play. The Patriots went 1-9 last season, according to West Metro Sports, with their only victory a 32-6 district win over Capitol Hill. After a 46-0 season-opening win over Capitol Hill on Aug. 28, Lewis said the squad was a year more mature in the weight room and "it's just starting to show."

Lawton Eisenhower fell to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in district.

Putnam City West travels to Choctaw on Thursday, Oct. 1, in a 6A-II-1 district matchup. Choctaw (3-2, 1-0) opened district play with a 35-12 win over Norman on Saturday, Sept. 26.
