Putnam City ran for 347 yards and seven touchdowns Thursday, Oct. 15, rolling past rival Putnam City West 54-26 in Oklahoma City.
The rain-soaked 6A-II-1 game clinched the Putnam City school district football title for the Pirates for the third straight season, West Metro Sports reported. West last held the title in 2023. Putnam City North has not swept its sister schools since 2020.
Senior quarterback Daeveon Simmons accounted for four touchdowns. He ran for touchdowns of 16, 24 and 1 yard and connected with junior Remy George on a 33-yard scoring pass. Simmons finished 6 of 11 passing for 86 yards and added 49 rushing yards.
Freshman Kamarion Thomas set the tone on the opening kickoff, returning it 51 yards to the West 30-yard line. Three rushes by senior Kahmi Herrera set up Simmons' first score.
West answered immediately. Facing third-and-long at his own 3-yard line, senior quarterback Aizjon Robinson ripped off a 97-yard touchdown run. He cut right, broke through the defense and outran everyone to tie the game at 6-6.
Robinson rushed for 138 yards on nine carries with two touchdowns, all in the first half. He did not return after halftime after being banged up, according to West Metro Sports.
The Pirates had two 100-yard rushers. Herrera carried 13 times for 100 yards. Junior Marcico Petties added touchdown runs of 31 and 70 yards.
Pirates coach Willis Alexander credited his offensive line for the ground attack and said the team goes where its linemen take it.
Penalties buried the Patriots. West committed 15 fouls for 144 yards, stalling drives and giving the Pirates short fields.
Despite the lopsided score, the result marked improvement for West, which lost to the Pirates 75-0 last season. West coach Rick Lewis said he sees progress.
"West is not the old West. We a new West," Lewis said.
Senior Kendyll Weaver led West's ground game with 197 yards on 14 carries, including a 54-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Senior Anthony Dupree added a 1-yard scoring run in the third quarter and stood out on defense with hard hits and tackles. Lewis lobbied for Dupree to receive All-State consideration.
Putnam City improved to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in district play. The Pirates have won three straight after an 0-4 start. West fell to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in district.
Putnam City hosts district leader Choctaw (6-2, 4-0) on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. The Yellowjackets have won six straight and shut out Putnam City North 66-0 on Oct. 15. West hosts Putnam City North (1-6, 1-2) on Friday, Oct. 23, for Senior Night.
