Putnam City beat Norman 28-27 in overtime Thursday, Oct. 8, at Harve Collins Field. Senior quarterback Daeveon Simmons threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for 100 yards and a fourth score, and the Pirates won their second straight game in overtime.
Senior linebacker Wyatt Keefer recovered a fumbled snap on Norman's two-point conversion attempt to end the game, first reported by West Metro Sports. Both of Putnam City's consecutive overtime wins have been decided by special-teams plays.
The sequence started when junior Kenneth Young was flagged for encroachment on Norman's extra-point try. The penalty moved the ball to the 1½-yard line and prompted the Tigers to go for two. The snap never reached backup quarterback Chase Watson. Keefer fell on it.
Putnam City trailed 7-0 for most of the first half after Simmons threw a first-quarter interception. Two plays later, Norman senior quarterback Joseph Kelley sprinted 87 yards for a touchdown.
The Pirates finally broke through in the third quarter. Simmons squeezed through defenders on a third-and-short quarterback sneak, then sprinted 60 yards untouched for a score that tied the game at 7-7.
Sophomore wide receiver Kiarri Franklin gave Putnam City a 14-7 lead in the fourth quarter on a 57-yard touchdown catch. Franklin snagged a slightly underthrown ball from behind Norman sophomore Ke'von Jeffries, who appeared to have an interception before falling to the turf at the 14-yard line.
Norman answered. Watson scored on a 10-yard run with 53 seconds left to put the Tigers ahead 21-14.
Simmons and senior wide receiver Shawn Jones III kept the Pirates alive in the final 13 seconds. Jones caught a 22-yard pass and a 30-yard pass to move into scoring range. He then hauled in a 14-yard touchdown at the left pylon with eight seconds remaining. Senior kicker Edgar Yanez hit the extra point to force overtime at 21-21.
Jones finished with eight catches for 146 yards and a touchdown.
In overtime, freshman tight end Andres Pollard caught a 5-yard scoring pass from Simmons to put the Pirates up 28-21. Watson answered with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Cyncere Pekah, setting up the fateful two-point try.
The win improved Putnam City to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in Class 6A-II District 1. The Pirates started the season 0-4 before rattling off back-to-back overtime victories. Norman dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in district play.
After the Oct. 2 overtime win over Putnam City North, head coach Willis Alexander told West Metro Sports that special teams made the difference: "We made a play in the kicking game. They didn't. That's the difference." The same script played out six days later against Norman.
Senior running back Kahmi Herrera added 91 yards on 14 carries. Putnam City piled up 491 yards of total offense to Norman's 366.
Putnam City travels to sister school Putnam City West on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. The Pirates then host district leader Choctaw on Friday, Oct. 23, visit Lawton Eisenhower on Friday, Oct. 30, and close the regular season against Midwest City on Friday, Nov. 6.
