Brandon Howell, 41, was shot and killed after pounding on a stranger's door in far northwest Oklahoma City on Friday, Oct. 16, police said.

Police identified Howell and described the altercation in an Oct. 19 press release. Officers responded to a shooting call at about 8 p.m. at a home in the 2800 block of Indian Creek Blvd., near NW 122nd St. and May Ave.

When officers arrived, they found Howell dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

Investigators determined Howell had approached the residence and began pounding on the front door, according to police. A man inside answered, and the two became involved in an altercation that ended with Howell being shot and killed by someone in the home.

Investigators said Howell and the residents did not appear to know one another. Police said it is not clear what motivated Howell to go to the residence or pound on the door, according to the Oklahoma City Free Press.

The shooter remained at the scene and was released after an interview with homicide detectives, police said.

As with all homicide cases in Oklahoma City, the case will be referred to the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office. That office will decide whether any charges are appropriate, according to the OKCPD press release. The police release did not provide a timeline for a charging decision.

As we previously reported, police initially said they were not searching for a suspect the night of the shooting. The victim's name and the circumstances of the altercation were not released until Oct. 19.

OKCPD Master Sgt. Gary Knight, the department's public information officer, is listed as the point of contact on the case.

The killing marks the city's 47th homicide of 2026.
