A man shot flames at Oklahoma County sheriff's deputies with a homemade flamethrower as they served an eviction notice, the sheriff's office said.

The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office released bodycam video of the incident on Aug. 26. The footage shows a 60-year-old man using an aerosol can and a lighter to blast fire toward deputies as they entered his apartment.

Aaron Brilbeck, public information officer for the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, told KFOR the flames reached a dangerous distance.

"You can see the flames fly a good 15, 20 feet. In fact, our deputies said they felt the heat from the flames coming out," Brilbeck said.

Deputies also found what appeared to be an improvised explosive device wired to a car battery inside the apartment, according to the sheriff's office. A bomb squad and tactical team were called to inspect the device and help de-escalate the situation.

Deputies eventually coaxed the man out of the apartment without further injury.

The man was arrested and transported to a Veterans hospital for treatment, according to the sheriff's office. The charges listed in the OCSO incident report are out-of-custody charges, meaning the suspect had not been formally booked into jail as of Wednesday.

The incident report lists three potential charges: assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possession or use of an incendiary device or explosives, and obstructing an officer. Formal charges from the Oklahoma County District Attorney's Office had not been announced as of Aug. 27.

Brilbeck said eviction and domestic calls rank among the most dangerous situations deputies face because the people involved are often in emotional distress. He said training helps, but deputies learn to react in seconds through on-the-job experience.
