A 2-year-old Edmond girl is dead after police say she suffered fatal injuries while in the care of her mother's boyfriend.

Joseph Chlebanowski, 26, faces complaints of first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse. The child's mother, Zyria Walker, 22, faces complaints of second-degree murder and one count of child abuse. No formal charges had been filed against either as of Monday, Aug. 31, according to News9. Both are in the Oklahoma County Jail.

Edmond Police Department officers responded shortly before 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 15 to a home in the 600 block of Vista Lane, near East Second Street and Coltrane Road, KOCO reported. Officers began life-saving measures on the unresponsive girl before Edmond Fire Department crews arrived and took over.

The child was transported to OU Children's Hospital in critical condition. She died from her injuries on Aug. 18.

What the affidavit says

An arrest affidavit obtained by KFOR describes what investigators found. Chlebanowski told officers he had been alone with the girl and her siblings since about 3:30 p.m. that day, after Walker left for work. He called Walker after 7 p.m., telling her the child was gurgling, unable to breathe and had experienced a nosebleed, the affidavit states.

Hospital staff documented new marks and bruises on the girl when she arrived. A CT scan performed Aug. 15 showed a brain bleed and brain swelling. Emergency room staff told investigators the onset of symptoms from such an injury would have been immediate.

The affidavit also notes Walker had brought her daughter to OU Children's Hospital on Aug. 12 for treatment of arm and face injuries. A separate CT scan performed at Mercy Hospital on Sunday, Aug. 9, after the girl fell off a toilet, had come back clear, according to the affidavit.

Arrests and bond

Chlebanowski was arrested the night of Aug. 15 on a child abuse complaint and booked on a $10 million bond, Fox 25 reported. After the girl's death, the complaint was upgraded to first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse.

Walker was arrested Tuesday, Aug. 25, and booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center. Her bond was set at $250,000.
