Edmond's public art collection has grown from 13 pieces to 377 in 25 years. The city wants residents to help mark the milestone.
The Edmond Visual Arts Commission (EVAC) is hosting an anniversary celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at The Old Icehouse, 101 W. 2nd St. The venue occupies a 1909 building that once housed the Edmond Ice Company. The city posted the announcement on Oct. 20.
The event will recognize the artists, donors, partners and community members who helped grow the collection since the program launched in 2001.
What Edmond built
The collection now includes 281 sculptures, 63 murals and 33 wall hangings spread across the city, according to the announcement. About one-third of the works come from local artists. The rest were created by artists from across the country.
Funding comes from three streams: private donations, partnerships and a 1 percent set-aside on city construction projects, the city said.
EVAC oversees the selection, display and maintenance of the collection under Edmond's municipal code, according to Art Edmond, the commission's website.
What comes next
The celebration also offers a look ahead. Edmond is preparing for Uncommon Ground, a 62-acre sculpture park expected to open in 2027, the city said. The park is planned as a destination for public art in central Oklahoma.
The event is free and open to the public. More information about Edmond's public art program is available at artedmond.com.
